Reveille

My grandfather died this morning. He went very suddenly in his sleep.

All things considered, not a bad way to go.

He will be missed not least for the hole in the world that he leaves behind.

As I said in your last post, I am truly sorry about your Grandad's passing and that you yourself have been unwell.

I know it sounds trite and I am certainly not religious by any means, but I truly believe that your grandad is in a much better place and is no longer suffering. I think maybe he was ready don't you? I can almost see your grandmother holding out her hand to greet him.

Gypsy: my sister said more or less the same thing. All he's wanted for the last 5 years is to be reunited with my Nan. I'm sure he has received a warm homecoming.

So sad for you. I hope you are comforted by the knowledge that you were a wonderful grandson who was surely loved.
Thinking of you.

Oh Steve, I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard when the older generations finally go and I know how much your grandfather meant to you. I have enjoyed hearing all about him to be honest - he sounded like a real character.

But for him I suspect it is good because he was tired of being ill and dependent on others.

Big hugs Steve xxx

Sorry to hear that, Steve, though it sounds like a blessing to all concerned.

I'm sorry for you, for the 'hole' he leaves behind, but like Gypsey said, the suffering is over, in a non religious way I DO believe in a better place and I do believe he's with your Nan.

Sorry Steve.
So good that you tried to help him be independent.

Oh Steve - yes, it is the best way to go but it sure has been hard on your and the rest of the family; the sheer ineptitude of the hospital. At least you can look back and think yes, I did the best I could for this old man that I loved.

Sorry to hear that, chief.
I know where you are right now, I've been there, but I'm sure you'll find your own path out of the woods.

By 'Woods' I'm not implying that you're the latest on the list of Tiger Woods conquests, but if you are then you kept that quiet!

All: thank you - it is very much appreciated. I don't feel up to writing much right now but hope to be back next week.

Inchy: thank you for making me laugh. ;-)

Very sorry to hear that. Some consolation in the peace of it - but in the end it is always a loss.

I hope I have caring family when I go.

Am truly sorry to hear this Steve, it is hard when a family link is broken.
I'm sure he's better off now tho', it didn't sound like much of an existence for him particularly in the past few months.
Hugs to you and yours. :-)

Thank you one and all.

I'm so sorry Steve. The respect and fondness you had for him came through so many posts.

You painted such a clear and loving picture of your grandfather with your posts that it felt I knew him. Certainly, I would like to have done so.

Words of condolence offer small, though loving comfort. I hope the next few days pass as easily for you and your family as death was for him.

Sorry for your loss Steve. Words are little good in such circumstances but at least his suffering is over and wasn't prolonged. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

To quote, 'All things considered, not a bad way to go.'

I think you're right.

And he went whilst in the minds of those who cared for him.

Not all of us will be so lucky.

May your grieving be peaceful.

Don't think of it as a loss. He'll sit in your mind for the rest of your life providing you with fond mamories and it seems that he was ready to go anyway.

Thank you all. I will try and compose a proper post next week. At the moment I feel both numb and raw and there seems to be far too much to sort out too soon.

Oh Steve. I'm so so sorry. You wrote with such affection about your Grandad. I believe that there can be no doubt that he is in a better place now with your Nan but that doesn't make your loss easier to deal with here and now. Cling to those happy memories and give yourself time to come to terms with all you have been through recently.
Lots of hugs to you xx
