Strange Fruit

It’s confession time, folks. And I am, I admit, a mite embarrassed by this one.

Now, I consider myself to be fairly au fait with new technologies. PCs. MP3s, mobile phones, digital cameras, data projectors, toilet eco flush systems... I’m familiar with the lot and have embraced them within the scope of my everyday existence. I even run a part time web design business for God’s sake. The internet is practically my living room, bedroom and office. But, er, let’s not discuss the bedroom part right here, ok?

So all things considered I’m a bit of a techno-head. A gadget geek.

But for the life of me I just cannot get my head around Blackberry’s. Not the device itself but the name. For some reason I have a real blind spot where the term Blackberry is concerned. No matter what I do it keeps coming out as Blueberry.

To the point where I now actively avoid discussing such devices in public because I know “Blueberry” will just slip out before I can stop it.

Is this how old age begins? Or Alzheimer’s?

Will I wake up next week referring to PCs as WCs? Digital cameras as those new fangled box brownie things?

Is there a help line number I can contact?

Via pigeon post naturally...

Well at least you're not coming out with raspberries.

Mmmm, it could be old age - I can give you the phone numbers of some care homes in Leamington Spa.

Hope I never get Alzheimers, George

Maybe you've been listening to too much Fats Domino!

I can tell you how old age begins, though. It's when you put something down and then, ten seconds later, think, "now where the hell did I put that"!

I get less and less patient with technology as I get older. Waiting for a subsequent download from RapidShare only to frequently find, when the time comes, that the page no longer loads frustrates the hell out of me!!

Indeed Annie, though I increasingly find myself playing gooseberry with new technologies...! And who is Al Zeimer anyway? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I know what you mean, TimeWarden, just my PC having a slow day sends me fuming up the wall. I haven't started putting things down and then forgetting I've done it but I have caught myself several times now putting objects in the wrong place... kettles into fridges, etc. Usually when I'm stressed and half awake in the morning. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I'm still trying to put my Ppod in my ear. Can't hear much but I'm working on it.

haha yeah well I always think Blackberries go very well with Apple - in a pie and all that. Not sure I would want anyone to cook my MacBook with my Blackberry and top it with pastry but the thought of blackberry and apple is jolly yummy. Makes me feel very peckish.

Nora, I'm too much of a has-bean to work out what you're referring to... ;-)

Gina, I must admit my post about technology does seem to have culinary undertones... and considering you can turn potatoes into batteries maybe vegetables are the way forward? Organic computers than you can eat when it's time to upgrade them? Throw Windows XP out into the compost when it's time to upgrade to Vista? Maybe it's time Bill Gates did a deal with the local allotment growers association...

The Demon has a similar problem. Her cousin and his lovely wife met in the Galapagos Islands, yet any time she mentions them, and by any time I mean every single fucking time, she prattles on about how they met in the Gallipoli Islands. I can correct her and 5 minutes later it's back to Gallipoli Islands again. It drives me up the wall. She also says old people's words like 'wireless' and refers to the internet as 'the intranet'. It's things like this that lead to domestic violence.

haha, my husband still calls Cds "records" much to the annoyance of our kids. Just go with it, Steve-O, there will come a time very soon where even English is outta date!!

i have never even SEEN a blackberry, so you're ahead of me there :-)

Hi Inchy, isn't the Gallipoli Islands full of Australians? It's weird how people have blind-spots with certain words. I had a friend who couldn't for the life of him pronounce "philosophical" properly - he kept staying "philostophical" which made me think of philistines... not quite the meaning he was aiming for I suspect.

Amanda, at least he's not referring to them as gramophones...!

Hi Eve, as I ever strive to be informative as well as entertaining there's some info on the mysterious blackberry right here! ;-)

i think it is the dumbest name they could have picked myself and don't discuss them at all :) my avoidant technic works well for me...i call my son's his over priced phone...and don't mention berries at all...good luck on this one...

Hi Daisy, I don't own one at all and have no plans to... but if I ever did I think I would name it "Chuck"...

I agree it's an odd name. Obvious to say but it just makes me think of fruit! Not very pertinent to a black, plastic-shaped techno thing.

That about says it all, OC... if you listen to the speaking clock on a blackberry are the pips healthier...?

They are ridiculous devices. My boss turned his into a smoothie the other day by accidentally sitting on it!

Yuck. From blackberries to suppositories... ain't technology wonderful!
