Breaking The Law! Breaking The Law!

Having opted to take Geography rather than History at school it is hopefully quite understandable why the following intriguing nugget of information completely passed me by until I had the usual post-breakfast conversation with my wife this morning...

Apparently it is officially illegal in England (and possibly the whole of the UK) to celebrate Christmas. A law was set down during the time of Oliver Cromwell declaring that the celebration of Christmas was to be outlawed and it has never ever been repealed. When Charles II, all round funkster, hip-happening-guy and disco king, ascended the throne everybody just thought buggery to Ollie and started celebrating Christmas like there was no tomorrow (i.e. no Boxing Day) and completely forgot about undoing Ollie Crommie’s silly little law.

It still stands.

So. We are all officially breaking the law.

Hmm.

Suddenly the fun element of Christmas has increased a hundred-fold...!

Merry Christmas and merry rebellion one and all!

Wouldnt it be nice if the parasites in Westminster devoted some time to repealing laws rather than dreaming up new ways to make us miserable?

And so say all of us! Expand our freedoms rather than encroaching on them... that would be a Christmas present worth having.

Does this mean we all have to wear leather caps like Ross Halford from Judas Priest though ?

I'm not a huge fan of Christmas anyway, I think it should be like the Olympics, every four years !

Leather caps are optional, however, showing off your crab ladder to all and sundry is absolutely compulsory.

ooooh how exciting. I don't have to smoke unsuitable substances anymore to get a thrill out of a bit of lawbreaking then? Christmas does suddenly sound a whole lot more fun.

My MIL is very law-abiding. Maybe if I ring her now and tell her that Christmas is against the law, she might just stay at home. Worth a try, I reckon! Thank you!

Hmm... you know that's not a bad ploy with the old In-Laws... might give that a go myself! ;-) Have a great Christmas!

If Christmas were every 4 years and we only had to see the in-laws every 4 years then I think we would have solved the problem of World Peace.

Steve said...

Amen to that!

it would be interesting to see them try to enforce it...do they have christmas stuff up at the police office...i wonder if the police know

I'm reliably informed that the police have the best booze and intoxicating substances known to man at their disposal having spent the last 12 months confiscating them from everybody else... the boys in blue are sure to have a great time even if we don't!

How fascinating! Can you imagine what kind of Xmas we'd be having if this really was enforced? It's bad enough having to endure dark, depressing mornings and early evenings, freezing cold days and nights and so forth, but Xmas just about makes it all worth while - thank the lord!

Too right - Christmas is at this time of year for a reason... to cheer people in the midst of dank winter gloom! To outlaw that is idiocy... thank God for Charlie 2 I say!

Let's just merely tolerate Christmas rather than celebrate it - job's a good 'un!

Steve said...

Unfortunately I need to celebrate Christmas - or at least something once a year - as I tend to just tolerate my job for the other 99% of the year. Job's a bad 'un... ;-)

Well with Christmas IN YOUR WINTERY NORTH is illegal, its only a matter of time before other illegal stuff becomes compulsory! Hoorah. Here's hoping. Merry Ho ho ho to you all.

Hmm... I wonder if we could send a wish-list to the powers that be?!

Have a wonderful Christmas Amanda - hope your and your family have a brilliant 2008!

Well that ploy re the inlaws didn't work. They turned up. It would have been better if they hadn't - since I nearly killed the MIL.

You are having a rather long Blogger Holiday?

I just had to get out and visit some blogs today. I'm sick of everyone here! I'm even tired of alcohol and food!

did you get some good lego? Are you up to building a MIL Exterminator for me with some?

Steve said...

Hello RB, yes I am being a bit lazy... but I promise I will return to this 'ere within a day or two. It may even be tomorrow if I can sufficiently rouse myself out of the chicken and chocolate stupour I am currently in - I know what you mean about being tired of alochol and food. I have a sudden urge to be abstemious and give my digestive system a break.

Sorry to hear the MIL has been sheer hell. I'm trusting she's now returned to her underground lair?

No MIL exterminator I'm afraid but Karen did buy me a superb Lego AT-AT (Star Wars) - the four legged war machine thing from Empire Strikes Back. It's magbificent. And it actually has a motor in it so that it walks! Sadly the guns don't fire real lasers but I'm sure it would cause quite a but of damage if dropped onto a MIL's head... say from the top of the stairs or out of a bedroom window for example... just a thought. ;-)

Sounds a jolly good idea to me. I would want something that hurts a great deal to happen to my MIL. ooooh I am still rather irate!!!

funny you seem to be having a little trouble spelling the word "alcohol". Should this tell me something? I thought after I wrote my last post that there was a certain irony in me falling in love with a G&T. Nothing could be truer!!!

thanks for your comment anyway. maybe you are right? I wish I knew. It seems to have worked for you.
