Morning Wood

Ok. I’ll admit that finally I’m getting in the mood for Christmas.

The spare room is over flowing with yet to be wrapped goodies for my loved ones. Karen and I are already compiling our Christmas food shopping list. Suddenly I’m able to stomach every cheesy film that the TV throws at me (I’m even enjoying the Christmas idents on all the TV channels).

And my budget is as blown as Hugh Grant on an L.A. side street.

I’m sure I’ll be annoyed with my spendthriftery come the New Year but for now I’m well pleased with what I’ve bought. There’s nothing worse than being lavished with gifts yourself on Christmas morning and then grimacing as you hand over a meagre pile of newspaper wrapped gift-ettes in return. Sure the January bills will be depressing but I can take consolation in the fact that Karen and the boys will be over the moon with what I’ve got them.

I’m sure such inner warmth will also help insulate me from the cold chill winds of February as I bed down for the night in front of Woolworth’s shop window...

And as for Roy Wood’s desire that it be Christmas every day... well. Nice idea Roy but, really, no. I honestly couldn’t afford it.

I’m already considering approaching Richard Branson for financial help as it is...

I wonder if it would help if I changed my name to Northern Rock?

Indeed. No wonder the bookies are slashing the odds on it being a "white Christmas"...

Oh God! I'm not sure this is the sort of comment box I should be venturing into it!

The post itself seemed harmless enough too.

Right I'm off

Do hope we haven't scared you away for good, Reluctant Blogger... most of the time we're reasonably clean. Honest.

haha yeah I bet. I'm not easily scared off. Although I did notice that you also drop babies! Perhaps not the "nice" family man I originally thought you were.

Aw.... what a lovely husband and dad you are Steve. My first husband used to buy me things that HE wanted. Once he gave me a Bryan Ferry CD and I have never shown any interest in his music and my [now ex-husband] was his number one fan! My second [and last] hubbie will lavish me with things to make me happy. I feel a glow knowing that he loves me enough to go to the trouble and expense.
Yes, you've done the right thing Steve - blow the cost - Karen will be thrilled!

Xmas sure does take its toll financially. You are correct Mr Steve. Thankfully I don't have any kids to think about unlike you so the pennies don't need to stretch quite so far (just on my ultra materialistic husband, ha ha)...

No the kids comment is a bit mean...I'm sure you DO get a lot of joy from spending Xmas with your offspring and as you say, their pleasure at getting nice gifts from their Dad! Crimbo is certainly much more of an event when you're a kid. My abiding Yuletide memory is when I was approx 11-12 years old and got a Star Wars Millenium Falcon toy one Xmas. I was so excited about getting it and the general Xmas thing, I didn't sleep atall the night before. The next day I was ill and ended up spewing up my Xmas din dins everywhere. Those were the days, eh?

As for Roy Wood, that song and Slade's "classic" drive me to distraction! However I'm quite partial to a bit of "Mary's Boy Child" by Boney M...

I remember seeing a Sesame Street episode where Elmo wanted Xmas everyday.... Bah humbug, I am quickly getting a tad titchy with the Christmas crowds dawdling about at the Malls...why can't they be like the rest of us who know what we want to buy?!! and just get on with it. The queues in the Post shops are rapidly turning into a life sentence too...apart from that, you're done good Steve, hope you get the 5p in your pudding!! grumpily yours, A

We put some twinkle lights up for Divali in November and it really cheered the place up but the tree didn't go up until the start of December and it is only now that the house is starting to look and feel festive.
I am actually quite impressed with how understated Christmas is becoming locally and the decorations in the shops seem to get a little later each year as I think they are now realising that punters are getting a little pissed off with decorations starting to go up in August!
Personally my favourite Christmas song is Fairy Tale of New York. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltiY-BqvOIU

Thanks for the thumbs up Annie! Us guys like to be praised!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Hitch - but a bit of smut never did anyone any harm!

Nice to see you back OC - just beginning to wonder if you'd departed Blogland like the Elves leaving Middle Earth! Being sick on Christmas day - what a fab memory! I came close to it once - when I was in my early twenties. Sadly I can't attribute my condition to over excitement but by over indulgence at the pub beforehand... thankfully I managed to keep the contents of my stomach in place and finish my Christmas dinner... my gran would not have been amused otherwise!

Amanda, if I get 5p in my pudding it'll only be because I put it there! When we were younger and spent Christmas as my grandparent's house, my grandad would not very subtley throw £1 coins into the custard... inflation, don't you know...

Aww, Daisy, I hope you feel more into it soon. By the amount of cookies you've baked I'd say you were part way there at least!

Ally, what great taste you have - "Fairy Tale Of New York" is probably the best Christmas record EVER and is loved by both Karen and I and always gets several airings in our house at this time of year... and I also maintain a massive soft spot for Greg Lake's "I Believe In Father Christmas" too... guess I'm a bit soppy at heart.
